Session 4: Environmental change in the high latitudes
Convenors: Steve Brooks (Natural History Museum, UK) and Viv Jones (UCL, UK)

Keynote: Professor John Smol
Department of Biology, Queen’s University, Canada
Climate change and human exploitation are threatening the fragile ecosystems of the High Latitudes at a greater rate than in most other regions on Earth. Palaeolimnology provides insights into ecosystem resilience to recent change that can be measured against the response to natural forcing since the late-glacial and Holocene.
This session will explore trends within and between these regions and the teleconnections that link them. It will provide a rare opportunity to bring together researchers to discuss their new results, put these results into a wider context, discuss new methods and approaches, identify outstanding research questions and create new synergies.
